Metro Network in India 2026: City-Wise Status, Growth and What It Means for Home Buyers

Ask anyone who has spent two hours in Delhi traffic what they want most from their next home, and “near a metro” will be high on the list. That instinct is backed by data. India’s metro network has grown faster in the last decade than in the thirty years before it, and it is quietly redrawing the map of where people choose to live.

Here’s where the metro network in India stands in 2026, what’s coming next, and how to use metro connectivity wisely when buying a home.

Quick Answer

As of September 2026, India’s metro and rapid rail network covers about 1,170 km across 26 cities, the third largest in the world. Delhi NCR has the largest network, followed by Bengaluru. Around 1,000 km more is under construction, and in Noida, the 11.56 km Aqua Line extension from Sector 142 to Botanical Garden was approved in February 2026.

How Big Is the Metro Network in India in 2026?

India’s operational metro network now stretches to about 1,170 km across 26 cities, leaving it only a little behind the US, which runs roughly 1,386 km. Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs figures placed before Parliament show nearly 1,000 km more under construction.

The growth is striking when you look back. India had only 248 km of metro across five cities in 2014, and by March 2026 it had reached about 1,155 km across 26 cities. Construction has sped up from roughly 0.68 km a month before 2014 to nearly 6 km a month since.

Ridership has followed. Daily passengers have climbed from about 28 lakh in 2013-14 to more than 1.15 crore in 2026. And the money keeps coming: the Centre has set aside ₹30,942 crore for metro projects in the Union Budget for FY 2026-27.

Major Metro Cities in India

Delhi NCR: The Largest Network

Delhi Metro, Noida Metro, Gurugram’s Rapid Metro and the Namo Bharat regional rail together make NCR India’s most connected region. The full 82.15 km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor is now operational, which has been a big boost for Ghaziabad. Delhi Metro Phase IV, covering 61.679 km across three corridors, is also under construction.

Bengaluru: The Second Largest

Namma Metro is India’s second largest metro network, with 96.1 km operational as of April 2026. Bengaluru Metro Phase 2 had reached 95.70% physical progress by June 2026.

Mumbai: Fast Catching Up

The Aqua Line 3 extension to Cuffe Parade opened in October 2025 and the line is now fully operational, while the first phases of Line 9 and Line 2B opened on 7 April 2026, with eight more lines under construction.

Newer Metro Cities

The metro is no longer just a big-city story. Tier-II cities such as Indore, Bhopal, Agra and Kanpur now have operational metro services. Bhopal became India’s 26th metro city when services started in December 2025. Other operational systems include Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur and Patna.

Noida and Greater Noida Metro: What’s Coming Next

For home buyers in Noida, the most important update of 2026 is the Aqua Line extension.

Sector 142 to Botanical Garden (Approved)

The Union Cabinet approved this extension on 14 February 2026. It will run 11.56 km with eight elevated stations, cost around ₹2,254 crore and is expected to be completed in about four years.

Why does it matter so much? It will give a direct interchange with Delhi Metro’s Blue and Magenta Lines at Botanical Garden, so commuters no longer have to get off at Sector 52 and walk to Sector 51 to change lines. Once it’s running, Noida and Greater Noida will have 61.62 km of active metro network.

Greater Noida West Extension (In Progress)

This is a separate project. It aims to link Noida Sector 51 towards Greater Noida West and, in the longer plan, Knowledge Park V. A Railway Board NOC was reported in June 2026, but it’s still at the planning stage.

How Metro Connectivity Affects Property Prices

A metro line changes a neighbourhood in three ways: shorter commutes, better rental demand and more commercial activity around stations. Industry estimates suggest homes in metro-connected zones can rise 10–25% in value after new corridors are announced and built, with rents rising 10–15%, especially within 500 metres to 1 km of a station.

For the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, the effect could be significant. Sectors along the Aqua corridor, including 137, 142, 143, 144, 150 and 151, stand to benefit most. Projects in this belt, such as Prateek Canary in Sector 150, sit on a corridor that is about to get a direct link into Delhi’s network.
